NATIONS’ MISSION PART 4
“CALLED TO GO” Matthew 28:18-20

INTRODUCTION:

We are continuing to examine our Mission statement as a Church.
Who are we?
What should we be doing as a church family?
What is Nations all about?

Here at Nations we are all about “Advancing the Kingdom”.
This is done in a progressive mananer:
Seek … Grow … Serve … Go

• Seek … seeking meaning … seeking community … and eventually seeking Jesus.
• Grow … personally … spiritually … relationally. Our Christian walk should become a walk of progressive growth
• Serve … we need to discover our gifts … be released into active service … and build our effectiveness as we do so.
• Go … to advance into a needy world … connect with un-churched people … and make an impact on them by how we live, what we do and what we say … to reach those who are seeking in such a way that they find Jesus in the process.

Wherever we are “at” today we can find a place in this process.
Our job, at Nations, is to help people discover where they are on their journey and help them to Advance the Kingdom in their life.

Today we will look at the fourth element of our growth track … Go. Why is going so important to us?

MATTHEW 28:16-20
The shock of the cross is over.
11 frightened and defeated disciples now see Jesus resurrected.
Their response is varied … some embrace Him as LORD … others doubt that what is happening is real.
A very human response.
To this unsure group, Jesus now gives His final commission.
They have left all and followed him.
They have been discipled and trained by him.
They have tasted failure & success, always with Jesus at their side to sort out their mess.

NOW THINGS ARE GOING TO CHANGE.
Like young people moving away from home for the first time THE RESPONSIBILITY has shifted to them.

This instruction is not just for them, but for the church that would be birthed through their witness.
THIS IS GOD’S FINAL PLAN FOR HIS CHURCH!

“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

1. GET UP & GO NOT SIT DOWN & WAIT!

1 Samuel 14:1-14, 23
Israel was in a similar position to these disciples.
They were small in number and feeling very vulnerable.
They were facing a daunting task (no weapons against a well organized & trained army)

Saul does just what most of us would do.
Vs. 2 He STAYS under a pomegranate tree

Our automatic response, when things are against us, is TO DO NOTHING!
To sit down & wait for GOD TO DO SOMETHING.

Jonathan realizes that sitting down & waiting is getting them nowhere.
Vs. 1 “Come, let’s go …”
Jonathan takes a risk and goes out to the Philistines.
The result? Vs. 23 “so the Lord rescued Israel”
God rescued Israel WHEN SOMEONE DID SOMETHING!

It is God’s plan that his people “GET UP & GO”

All through Bible history we see that “go” is God’s plan.
Abraham, Israel, Isaiah, Jesus, the disciples … all saw God move when they obeyed the call to “go”.

2. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO GO?

Simply it means to do something MORE than what we are doing now.
It means to move out of our comfort zone to reach people who don’t know Jesus.
To see a need, and DO something about it. A community pantry, training to become a community chaplain, starting an outreach amongst a certain group of people, rock solid, M&Ms, Golden age, visiting your neighbours …

Going involves making the effort to connect with those who don’t know Jesus.
Building trusting relationships, taking time to visit … to listen … to hear their story … to experience their world.

The church needs to learn to act like missionaries again.
Missionaries integrate into the culture … learn the language … earn trust … listen to local stories … earn the right to speak into lives … and then only at the appropriate time, share Jesus’ story!
This is what it means to “go” today!
Only a church that is committed to “go” will change a lost world!

3. NO “GO” NO “LO”

Matthew 28:19-20
“Therefore go … And surely (lo) I AM WITH YOU”
The promise is quite clear.
Go … THEN Lo I am with you.
When the church responds in obedience to the call to go, God responds with His manifest presence.
The power follows those who “Go”.
God acts powerfully, when we respond in obedience.

Mark 16:15-17
“Go … and these signs WILL ACCOMPANY THOSE WHO BELIEVE”
“accompany” … The signs follow those who “go”
The gifts of the Spirit are released when we need them.
They are released when we “go” and do God’s work.

The power of God is NOT FOR US.
The power of God IS TO ENABLE US TO WORK FOR HIM!

CONCLUSION:

God’s plan is for us to go with what he has given us.
The church was never designed to be a place people COME to.
It is a people, filled with God’s Spirit, who GO with what they have & share his life.
GO is God’s plan … will we, like Jonathan catch the vision & take what we have to a world that needs it?
As we do, Jesus’ promise is clear: GO and LO I WILL BE WITH YOU!
