ROMANS 6 ALIVE IN CHRIST
“Living a life of freedom”
Last time we saw in Chapter 5, as a result of what Jesus did for us on the cross:
a. We are JUSTIFIED … declared to be “in the right”
b. We have peace with God …
• A new relationship
• A new provision
• A new state … progressive healing & a free future
• A new authority
What, then, do we do with this?
Paul now moves, in Chapter 6, to the practical issue of “how does this affect us now?”
So far we have been considering our position before God.
But how God sees us needs to become reality in our daily lives.
Justification must move to sanctification!
How God sees us needs to become more & more how others see us.
“Sozo” … “salvation” needs to be not just a yesterday thing, or a “spiritual thing”, but an ongoing experience in our lives.
How does this happen?
“LIVING A LIFE OF FREEDOM DAILY”
The immediate response of the religious person to Romans 1-5 is “what … grace … free … sounds like license to me!
What about repentance? Holiness? Life change?”
Paul addresses this in Romans 6:1-10
Vs. 1 “Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?”
“go on”, “continue” = “persevere or abide in”
“If it is all free … if salvation is by faith … if it is all God and none of me … then surely I can live just as I please?
Surely what I do now doesn’t matter.”
Vs. 2 “By NO MEANS!”
If Jesus paid such a high price for our freedom & healing, how can we possibly return to bondage & brokenness?
Vs. 3-4 Baptism → a re-inactment of what has happened in us at salvation.
Buried with Christ … old life buried … we are raised up new creations!
We now must live out that new life daily!
No digging around in the water for more of the old.
Turn to walk onwards into the new.
Vs. 6-7 We are no longer slaves to sin.
“slaves” = “to be in bondage to or give oneself up to”
The power of sin/brokenness is broken at the cross.
We are dead to the old.
Vs. 8 We are now called to live our new lives WITH HIM!
If everything is by faith, how do we live this new life without returning to legalism … without returning to living by the law?
What did Abraham do? Romans 4:18-21
• He saw the present situation.
• He heard the truth of God’s Word.
• He chose to accept what God said & focus on that
1. COUNT YOURSELVES DEAD … ALIVE Romans 6:11
“count” = “reckon” Gk “logizomai” “to take an inventory”
“to calculate, to make an account of”
An accounting/book keeping term.
Figures in columns … income, expenditure, balance
An inventory of your financial state.
You know exactly where you are because its on the page!
Paul is saying, we need to do the same spiritually.
We need to look at the facts from God’s point of view.
What has Christ done?
What does that mean for me now?
What is my position before God?
What power does sin have over me now?
2. DO NOT LET SIN REIGN ANY MORE Romans 6:12
“reign” = to exercise the highest influence over/control
TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR LIFE!
When we come to God through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are declared to be “in the right”.
In reality, we have been returned to the garden like Adam & Eve … BUT THE TWO TREES ARE STILL THERE!
We can choose today what we eat from … life or death!
Death no longer controls us … but it still calls out to us.
We still have a choice … every day.
“Do not let sin reign”. Eat from the right tree!
“obey” = “to harken to a command or submit to. Like one who at the knock of a door comes to listen to who it is”.
IGNORE THE DOORBELL WHEN IT RINGS!
The Bible calls it “repentance” … turn 180 degrees & walk the other way.
STOP IT! TAKE CONTROL. USE YOUR WILL. SAY NO!!!!
3. DO NOT OFFER ANY PART OF YOURSELF TO SIN
Be wise about what you do, say, think & where you go.
Don’t play with the old life … walk away!
4. FREEDOM IS NOW A CHOICE Romans 6:15-22
Choose your master. We all have to serve somebody!
Serve God, NOT the old life.
Do “God things” … Read your Bible, Study your Bible, pray, attend church regularly, build good relationships, go on courses (leadership development, Bible College courses etc.), learn to give, to worship, learn to forgive and love etc.
This is NOT LAW … it is choosing to live free!
Choosing to involve yourself in life-giving things.
Choosing to walk away from things that kill, steal & destroy.
I do it because I want to not because I have to!
I do it because Jesus did so much for me.
I do it because it is the pathway to life!
THE RESULT? Romans 6:22
The benefit we reap leads to holiness & eternal life.
“Life” = Fullness of life … real life!
Jesus has done it all. I am accepted, loved, I have a place, I have a future. My relationship with Him is secure BUT
NOW I HAVE SOME GOOD CHOICES TO MAKE.
1. Count myself dead to sin & alive to God. Focus on the truth.
2. Do not let sin reign anymore … take charge of my life.
3. Do not offer myself to sin anymore … make good choices.
4. The result is gradual holiness & eternal life … WE CHANGE on the inside AND on the outside … we grow … we mature … we become more like Christ year by year.
